My laptop has low sound. I remember someone posting a script to act as an amplifier.
Anyone familier with something like this?
Yes, after 35 years working around Airplanes and loud trucks, falling asleep with headphone on, I am a little deef,

I run a cabled external usb speaker for what you suggest. I was Helicopter Avionics Crew Chief and I still ride Harley Davidson Motorcycles with no hearing protection < sometimes > .

Have you slid up the PCM slider in alsamixer yet and slid up volume also. There are mixer settings in the menu and also the antix control center. Just poke around and you will find them.

Yes ran the mixers,  checked the levels.. i can't wear headphone. It was just some kind odd script that acted as an amplifier would. it was  a while back. Maybe PCM replaced it.

You could try running"alsamixer -D equal" and increase the volume on some of the channels.   This makes the sound louder but it can also cause distortion.

Some previous releases of antiX shipped with both an equalizer and a pre-amplifier available within AlsaMixer.  In recent releases this no longer the case.  Either of them may be made available, but not both of them concurrently.

Presently antiX ships with a system-wide equalizer available which can be accessed via the Control Centre (CC).  This will be deactivated, but remain visible in the CC when enabling the preamp.

The steps to activate the preamp are straightforward, but must be done manually.

To Enable the Preamp

Switch the system-wide configuration of AlsaMixer
Rename /etc/asound.conf to /etc/asound.conf.EQUALIZER
Copy /etc/asound.conf.PREAMP to /etc/asound.conf

Enable AlsaMixer to use the configuration for the preamp
Open a terminal and input the following
service alsa-utils stop
service alsa-utils start

Add the preamp slider control to AlsaMixer
Control Centre-->Hardware-->Test Sound
Note: this is a one time only step.  The playing of a sound file at this stage automatically and permanently displays a slider control named Pre-Amp in AlsaMixer

Adjust AlsaMixer to your preferred levels
Control Centre-->Hardware-->Adjust Mixer
Note: the Pre-Amp slider is usually located as the last slider on the right hand side of the AlsaMixer window
Adjust the slider as desired
Note: setting the Pre-Amp slider to an excessively high level can distort the sound and might damage the loudspeakers.  It is safer to use a low Pre-Amp level, and adjust the overall volume level via the other sliders.

On a per user basis (rather than a system wide basis) XMMS might easy way to handle that.  It ships as the default GUI audio player in antiX.  It includes both a preamp and an equalizer.

I have an iLuv case like this with an on/off button and volume knob on the front of it this works good but I forget to turn it off..lots of dead batteries in my junk drawer.
