I think the problem with fonts in urxvt is just a matter of using a decent default configuration. If you have one then we can include it in the next release.

Below is the config I use on my Gentoo system. It is in the file ~./Xdefaults. In my startup scripts I have the line:

xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults
but I don't know if it is needed. I doubt my config should be used as the antiX default. It probably won't even work OOTB on antiX but it does give you a starting point. Changing the font size with ctrl-shift-<up/down> is pretty cool. I keep forgetting I have that. I also use the tabs extension but I modified the Perl code slightly so I can use it to restart urxvt sessions after a reboot. I love urxvt but IMO it is a huge pain to configure. Supplying antiX with a decent default configuration would be a great benefit.

Maybe the following will be automatically handled / excluded during the final build.
Currently, their presence within the alpha iso adds quite a chunk of bloat:

78Mb /var/apt-xapian-index/index.1/*

9.6Mb /var/apt-show-versions/*

Per my testing: if absent, the contents of each of the above paths are simply auto-regenerated when needed.

during an icewm session --} starting Rox pinboard... kills conky
restarting conky, first try --} no conky output displayed
perform a second attempt to launch conky --} conky output correctly displays AND icewm panel displays an incessantly blinking"window item" for the conky process
(blinks until/unless the item receives a mouseclick in the panel, then the blinking item disappears)

These contain differing string values, and...

-- I believe the machine-id should be omitted from the iso (a privacy/fingerprinting consideration)

-- if omitted, I believe machine-id file is auto-generated during init (ref: refracta forum discussion)

i appreciate that the alpha is for FULL antix, and that multilingual broad unicode coverage is a design goal, but...

-- 100Mb worth of fonts seems excessive

-- the SELECTION of preinstalled fonts is non-ideal, in terms of providing decent alternative monospaced fontsets

-- selection is also non-ideal in terms of including (liberation?) fonts which lack inbuilt hinting instructions

I'm not a fonts expert; hopefully someone who reads will reply to suggest:

-- which fonts overlap and might be thinned?
-- which of the preinstalled fonts lack hinting, and what better comparable/alternative could replace?

I'm recommending inclusion of fonts-droid package (ouch 7.8Mb) on the merit of its ttf monospaced variants

Yeah, space in the iso is limited, i hear ya.
Nonetheless, I'll recommend a few additional candidate packages for inclusion (all iso versions, not just FULL):

apt-rdepends
65Kb package size. Great learning tool (and its man page is straightfoward)

gtkorphan
1Mb package size. HUGE functionality beyond what deborphan provides

ncdu
126Kb package size. ncurses directory usage utility
enables you to drill-down thru paths, to find out where"bloat" exists
IMO, it's interactive output is more insightful than"baobob" et al (gui-based disk space profiling utils)
and is more convenient to use than trying to achieve a similar view via"mc" midnight commander

mate-system-monitor
3Mb (er, 5.5Mb w/ deps)
The great ol' gnome2 system monitor tool, without gnomey pkg dependencies.
HUGE functionality (and clarity/insight) beyond that provided by htop, pstree, lxtask, and/or xfce4-taskmanager

note to self:
preinstalled or not, should describe these within the proposed, expanded"welcome" documentation

BUG (not a typo):

fluxbox menu --} accessories --} SystemTools --} Bleachbit (as root [sic]

Is fluxbox choking on the closing parens character?
In any event, the launcher for this menu item fails.

I hand-edited, replaced the inner parens with dashes, performed"update menu", restarted fluxbox...
...and even after logout/in, still the launcher for this item isn't working.

BUG: roxterm ~~ preconfigured"color profile" for root user

(mentioned this elsewhere, but i can't find that post to edit/clarify it)

test:
copy/paste the output of inxi display in roxterm... paste into geany and note that some of the inxi output text
(formatted for roxterm display as bold? italicized? underscored?)
is being rendered as white text on a white roxterm background

Convinced that some yet unknown bug must have been the cause of my earlier video etc problems...
...tonight I wiped the pendrive and reinstalled the alpha iso.

Although I seemed to recall that I previously had to"mess with" using/saving the Fkey boot screen selections (video, and save),
tonight I set out to test with careful attention to manipulating only ONE variable at a time while testing... and I encountered a snag (bug) much sooner than I had expected.

During first boot, I simply chose"root persistence" menu item and pressed Enter.
At the"create rootfs file" prompt, I pressed Enter to accept the defaults.
Following the"creating..." delay, ...some scrolling lines of text, CPU fan ramped up, black/blank screen + unresponsive.

Second boot: chose bootmenu line one ---} successful autologin to non-persistent session, as expected.
===== normal shutdown ======
=== boot WinXP and replace rootfs file on pendrive with a"known good, previous backed up copy" ===
reboot to pendrive, choose"root persistence" menu item, press Enter... and every thing is fine, is exactly as expected

When I began tonight's testing, I had the"theory" that a bug existed related to changing the"video" selection and / or using the F7,
(leaving you permanently screwed, unable to successfully clear a non-working"saved" video setting)(or something) but, tonight, up to this point I had not yet touched those.

Clearly, at some point during previous testing, the newly-introduced"create rootfs, if missing" feature worked successfully.
Guessing: I probably misplaced blame for its failure at first run, believing a video setting mismatch was causing the post-init blank/black screen.

note: the"CPU fan ramping up, post-init" observation is not new (to this alpha).
On my system, it has occurred with every kernel beyond 3.12.x

Continued test runs:

=== boot WinXP and delete the"known good, from backup" rootfs file from pendrive ===
reboot to pendrive, choose bootmenu line 1 + F6=fluxbox + F7=Save, press Enter.
msg line stating"begin gfx menu update", followed by autologin to fluxbox
Session is normal (video properly detected), normal shutdown

reboot pendrive and verify the F6=fluxbox preference has been retained (yes it has).
choose"root persistence" menu item and press Enter.
accept"create rootfs file" defaults ---} fail
black screen. force poweroff. boot to WinXP, delete rootfs from pendrive... lather, rinse, repeat
trymanually specify same (ext3, 830Mb) values ---} fail
try ext3/750Mb (1260 available on the device, FWIW) ---} fail
try ext2/750 (to match the specs of the"known good" rootfs I had backed up) --} fail

FWIW, during one or more of the above attempts, before the screen blanked I managed to read/note lines stating:"mounting persist device" and (red text)"lsmod not found"

I'm flat-out stumped

Require root persistence. In other words, don’t boot if root persistence can’t be enabled.
Just a reminder: since the introduction of the"create rootfs if missing" feature, the documentation probably should be revised.
Here is a bare-bones script for saving persistent root changes:
Also, unless I'm overlooking some critical detail...
the easiest"backup" regimen for my live install now seems to be:
save a copy of the the original iso file, and simply backup the current rootfs file to separate media for safekeeping.
edit:
the crucial detail may be that initrd.gz is dynamically updated (changed) when F7"save" is performed
(After changing to {initrd.gz dropboxed version b, c} I am now seeing changed datestamp for initrd.gz after save.)

Oops, I'm repeating myself. I should take a hint & stop pissing into the wind.
(admittedly, many of the"cruft" files are highly compressable, occupying much less space within squashfs than their"filesize on disk")
