I decided to dig out the oldest of my laptops and install AntiX. The spec is as follows

A HP nc4000 with a mere 512Mb of RAM. This only has a Pentium M chip of 1400 M

AntiX installed in a 7mins 47 secs and boots to desktop inside 1 min - very acceptable.

Everything worked out of the box apart from my aircard but I know I have to edit a few files for this to work.
