Suggestions sought and reasons why.

Remember, antiX-M8 is aiming to be smaller than antiX-M7.5 in size, but just as functional.

Idea: Remove mybashburn, ario, catfish or rox-stuff (few use them and alternatives are provided)?

this is not an app, but i noticed that gTargish icons set is 95mb in size and my normal icons set has 10 mb on disk.

I have made some of these suggestions to antix - so I'm posting them here for everyone to discuss.

1. I don't think we need mybashburn.
2. I would like to see one terminal emulator - urxvt is looking good right now.
3. Do we really need mpd? We could lose ario and ncmpc if we don't, not to mention a slightly faster boot time. There should be some replacement for ncmpc, though. Isn't there a cli version of xmms? If not, there are other choices. (If users want a jukebox on antix, I suggest installing gmusicbrowser.)
4. I think we need to replace gtangish icon set. It's too heavy as ice-m mentioned.
5. Could we just have gmplayer and not xine? Perhaps xine could be installed by the user?
6. Perhaps replace grip, which has a few depends, with the lighter asunder?
7. I use catfish quite a bit. I would hate to see it go. Is there a lighter replacement?
8. I would like to see gnomebaker replace brasero as I've had some issues with brasero that aren't present in gnomebaker.
9. Do we really need mnetwork, ceni, and wicd? I understand the need for an app that can"browse" for access points, but do we need two of them? As swish as wicd is, ceni works fine. And if wicd is bloated, we could try rutilt if you really want a gui app.
10. Screenshot replaced with zenscreen by erie.

3.i like xmms and i hate the itunes clones just for the record. a foobar2000 clone would be nice.
3. john, anti uses mpd __{{emoticon}}__
7. i use catfish too. i tried to search something in pcmanfm and no result. maybe i searched wrong.

- does anyone use links2 browser ?
- and i propose to disable lighttpd at start-up.

1- I never use catfish, just locate in the terminal. I just tried catfish again to search for .png and it came back empty, I must be using it wrong.

2- I see no reason to keep the web server lighttpd, it's great but how many people use it?

3- 1 audio and 1 video player is good for me. xmms and gmplayer work well.

4- Don't use grip so you pick whatever you like.

5- I have not seen any talk of idesk or roxdesktop lately, maybe they can be purged?

6- I use wicd all the time on my laptop so I would suggest keeping it.

7- will have to think a little more

I don't think roxdesktop will be removed - anti believes these are integral to antix. Also, I found a page while googling that describes how rox can be used to automatically place icons on the desktop for removable devices. But erie has a point - rox, pcmanfm, and idesk all can be used to put icons on the desktop. But each has it's own advantages. For example, if you use rox, you can't use nitrogen for walls; so, if you want to use nitrogen, you need to use idesk.

As much as I like pcmanfm, should it be left to the user to install?

I tried to install emelfm throught aptitude, but it wanted to downgrade a few apps. Hmm, should we just keep mc and rox?

-i use pcmanfm now, and i like it to be installed. because if i install pcmanfm it gets gnome-icon-theme by it self and i have to delete them every time i install antix __{{emoticon}}__ . but if it's a majority u can remove it.
-there are so many apps that do the same thing. we have to find a common one or two as default and the rest out.
-i like the idea of mplayer and xmms too.
- maybe look in some of the packages that are not in view? i'll like the boot time to be a little faster

I use pcmanfm regularly. I always go to version 0.4.4.2 because it takes care of networking. Newer versions are nice but since networking is experimental is not available.

These apps will stay.

Filers: rox, pcmanfm and mc. All are very useful for different things.
Audio/video: mplayer, xmms, mpd (plus ncmpc)
Networking: mnetwork, ceni and wicd. Again some have found one to work better than the other.

What about removing the following?
gtk-gnutella
mtpaint

Removing gTangish icons set saves about 25MB on the livecd. I'd like antiX to be somewhere in the region of 350MB if possible, but certainly less than 400MB

Only used them a couple of times. I see no reason for them to be on the iso. They will always be available.

mtpaint would be useful. every light distro has some kind of image editor.

edit: also the crystalsvg, hitcolor and rox icons set seems to be incomplete or are they used in programs?
in usr/share/fluxbox there is an wallpaper 300 kb off __{{emoticon}}__

I agree that mtpaint or other image editor be included on the iso.

I've never used gtk-gnutella.

I think we should keep streamtuner on the iso.

If you remove the gtangish icons the cc with have to edited to reflect the new icons. May be we could come up with specific icon for it?

I've been playing around with a test antiX-M8.iso

I removed
gtangish icons
gtk-gnutella
mtpaint
Mybashburn
gxine
wicd (just to see)
ario
replaced wterm with rxvt-unicode (urxvt)

added new icon set plus a couple more.

New iso size is approx 370MB.
Basically not really worth worrying about from antiX-M7.5 which was 392MB

So, in that light, I think we should remove apps that we agree no-one really needs on the livecd and can be installed easily from the repos.

I suggest to remove:

ario
Mybashburn
gtk-gnutella
gtangish icons
replace wterm with rxvt-unicode (urxvt)

It is good, I think, to keep gxine for those that prefer it over gmplayer, especially for dvd playback (mplayer doesn't have a dvd menu)

And, eriefisher is right. We need to change the icons in the antiX control centre from ones in gtangish to nouveXT-drake.
Any volunteers?
