some time ago i had this problem with the liveusb sticks, they would drop in a limited shell. it turned out that to blame was the sata controller setting from bios, it was set to compatibility instead of AHCI. i see that you have WinXp on the netbook maybe that is the cause for the error, winxp only boots in compatibility mode and the stick, for me at least, booted in AHCI.

another oddball thought...I have an old sony that doesn't like to read certain brands of recordable CD. The only brand I've had consistent luck with is memorex. I cringe everytime memorex changes their packaging or adds a feature because I'm afraid the disks won't work in that machine. I've had trouble with store-brands, imation, and verbatim. won't help your usb woes, but might be something to check on your cd boots.

again, just my 2 cents. good luck.

So, Interestingly the live cd that i was using on the eee, only boots to antiX shell when i boot to it from my desktop. It is supposed to have a gui right?
Yes, you should have gotten to a Desktop. Icewm in fact. Now that I know it won't boot up on your Desktop. I feel that the problem is not your 701 or AntiX.

Somehow a step is not working when you made your CD. Either CD is a CDRW that is wore out or a low quality CD or you are burning way too fast maybe. Hard to tell from West Tx.

You are going to have to uninstall U3 software on that Cruzer. At least in my experience I had to, to get the Cruzer to boot a live Iso. The U3 uninstaller is the only successful way I could do this. After removing U3 software. Then I would delete the fat32 partition using Gparted and reformat it as fat32 again to make sure the file system was fresh on the USB drive. Virgin so to speak.

You don't want to format the stick as EXT2 file system. When antix2usb is ran. It will format the drive for you automagically. If you read my thread on how I did it. You will see all the wrong things I did before I finally made a successful live persistent USB of AntiX 8.5.

If you ever get successful making a bootable pendrive and get it to boot on your 701. You can also use the AntiX persistent live usb to install AntiX to your internal 4 gig SSD or just run it with Windows as a dual boot by using the ESC key to switch boot order. This will boot the pendrive seperate from the Windows Drive and any changes made like wallpaper and such will stick on next reboot of flash drive.

Happy Trails, Rok

In case you were not aware. I have wrote some screenshot install instructions also for Asus EEEPC 900 also. Only difference in your case is you don't have 2 internal SSD drives. The screenshots will show you what to expect when you get to the installer.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Ok, i think were getting somewhere now. I was burning the cd image onto DVD-Rs which in many cases works fine, but just to be sure, i used unetbootin and created a live USB (i had removed U3 when i got pendrive about 2 yrs ago) with Rok's linked image.
With no boot option modifications, using the live usb i get:

"Can't find filesystem" error on my eee
no gui(icewm) on my desktop
But strangely enough the live usb boots and works perfectly gui and all on my laptop! (vaio z)

So it must not be the burning medium, or the image, or the flash drive itself.
I think the fact that it didnt work on my desktop or eee is maybe just a coincidence. agree?

Oh and my eee has no sata bios options, im using a usb optical drive. but thanks Ice!

so now... back to the eee itself as main possible problem? or not?

Thanks

I read somewhere where a bios setting for eeepc 701 if set wrong will default usb ports to 1.1 instead of 2.0. I can't for the life of me remember where the setting is, what it is called, or where I read it.

Dinner Time right now. So you might have to google it yourself.
If Usb boots on Desktop. It should boot on your 701.

Cuz I guess I am the only one in the world right now running AntiX on a Asus 701 cuz I am the only 701 user responding to this post. What a wonderment.

You are getting close any hows.

I've got an eee904 that boots fine except when that one port decides to be usb 1.1 instead of usb 2.0. Happens in winxp as well, so I know its in the hardware, at least on me eee.

Ok, the only computer that i am able to boot antix on without issues is my vaio. So i booted antix from a unetbootin'd flash drive and then redownloaded the iso linked to by rok. I then proceeded to use antix2usb and create another live usb with a different pendrive. Unfortunately, I get the same"cant find filesystem" error on my eee with this new live usb also.

additionally a live usb (created with ubuntu's tool) of netbook ubuntu 10.04 drops me to the busybox shell and will not work either, although a live desktop ubuntu 10.04 usb does work albeit very slowly.

I truly am stumped guys. Is it the eee? what do you think?

Thanks again.

I'm stumped also. I threw in my posts all the options/things I can thin of.
Whats funny is. Zoev. A long time EEEPC forum member. Has this in his signature.
Black 701 4G"Lokki" | 2GB RAM | AntiX-8.5-Base
Black 1000HE"Odin" | 1GB RAM | Eeebuntu 3.0 Base
So it looks to me I aint the only AntiX 701 user on the planet. And Zoevs EEEPC sounds like a 4gig just like yours.

So if it aint AntiX, And it aint the 701 4gig. Maybe you are just in a"Bad spot of the Universe" __{{emoticon}}__ Just trying to lighten the situation.

I would try a different flash drive, if it was me. I know for a fact the 701 will boot off of SD Camera Flash Cards. I have done numerous installs, both full, live, live with persistence, on external SD Flash drives. I know you say the pendrive boots on the Viao. But I can be a stubborn cuss (forum members wil attest to this) when some kind of roadblock shows up. So I explore all avenues/options before I cave it.

Another thing you can try. Don't fish slap me guys __{{emoticon}}__ . Download

Use Unetbootin like you did for AntiX to make the Puppeee Live Usb.
See if it boots __{{emoticon}}__

maybe someones already considered it, but could it be because i only have 512mb of ram and its a live cd? Zoev has 2GB and Rok has 1GB....

Thanks again all.

Try adding rootdelay=20 on your newly created usb from antix2usb.

Ram should not matter endor. I run AntiX 8.5 on my P3, 256 MB, IBM A22 also. I run 512 MB Swap Partition on it also. But AntiX booted up just fine on my 256MB of Ram before I used Gparted to divy/partition up the drive.

512MB is Plenty for AntiX. We have members that run AntiX exclusivly on as little as 128MB of ram and successful installs on 64MB Laptops/Desktops as well.

So ram is not the issue.

I've a 701eee and am experiencing the same issue as endor43 when using Unetbootin on a thumb drive when attempting to run Antix 8.5 live. The live boot does just fine with the thumb drive on my Dell tower. The 701eee is currently running Puppeee on an SD card and formerly had Kubuntu NBR on the SSD drive which satisfactorily but sluggish. I'll go through the BIOS as suggested and check all of the recommended links and report back in the next few days. BTW just joined the forum today and am very impressed with the dedication of the support. Likewise with Mepis, SimplyMepis8.5 is on my tower.

One of the things I found out with not finding file system was in one of my EEEPCs running the testing was in Bios setting for Operating systems I had to either set it back to start or finished. I can't remember off hand which option I used though to get it to boot correctly. This was on a persistent usb pendrive AntiX 11 testing install though.

For any other ideas. I guess you could refer to my entries in the wiki on EEEPCs. Hope You have success on your 701. Mine is screaming fast and am happy with it and running liqourix kernel also.
