Well first time here posting. Finally installed antiX on a Dell CPX @500 mhz and 256 ram. I was impressed that after installing and some"fiddling" the wireless pcmcia card actually worked.
I know zero about fluxbox but so far am getting around it ok. I think I'm perhaps too used to KDE. Anyway look forward to reading and learning more about this os. doing some upgrading now but I'll check back and let you know how it's doing on this older machine . (I think this one meets the definition of that more than some I've read about at 1gig and 512 LOL) Thanks for all the post I read prior to this that caused me to get this os to begin with....

Hello and welcome Deach.

Fluxbox is pretty simple by design and to use. It won't take long to figure it out. If you prefer a more full featured desktop download and install XFCE. I use it most of the time. It's not as heavy as KDE but has alot of features to smooth things over.

Welcome to antiX Deach.

I'm sure you will soon get used to using fluxbox. If you want you can use icewm, also available in Lysistrata and Spartacus.
At login screen, toggle F1 key to icewm, login.

Welcome, Deach. We're using exactly the same machine. I've run full Mepis on this--works fine though a tad sluggish. So I've run xfce with Mepis, again okay--but that was some time ago and I wasn't sure about the stability. So far, it's antiX that really makes this laptop hum.

My only gripe has been a bad RAM bracket that prevents upgrading to 512 MB. The machine will work at 512 for a while (if I pad the bracket with anti-static material) but eventually freeze until I remove that second RAM card.

I find nothing online about this being characteristic of the model, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

Enjoy your antiX.

I have the exact same problem. I only have two 128 sticks in mine but I know it will freeze ant that's it. I could tell when I put the ram in that one slot was bad. Man maybe we've still got warranty? LOLOL Anyway good luck to you, I did the same thing you did. Guess if I ever upgraded to 512 the thing would really humm along

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

ie you have to edit 2 files.

1. /etc/slim.conf (as root)

add xfce to the end of this line

sessions icewm,fluxbox,xfce

2. .initrc

to something like this.

case $1 in
icewm)
exec icewm
;;

xfce)
exec startxfce4
;;

fluxbox)
exec startfluxbox
;;
*)
exec startfluxbox
;;
esac

BTW Which version of antiX are you using?
There is an antiX-xfce-alpha1.iso available if you prefer.

I just found that actually but I'm very very confused on where this .initrc file is located/???? Sorry for the newbie thing here but i really like this and might as well start from here learning some of this...

I think probably I'll be using fluxbox and xfce when I have it all set up. I might go ahead and just get the xfce build if I can't have success here in a while...Gonna grab some lunch here, take a break and regroup. Thanks

OK the xfce build looks kinda small.....i guess it's minimal or something. I"m still working on the build I already have...at least for now.

Running 7.1 is the version I believe. uname reveals Linux mepis1 2.6.22-1-mepis-smp

Ok Deach here it is.

.initrc means a hidden file in yout home folder.
So open files (rox-filer) on the menu, and then then click on the 'eye' button to show hidden files, and click to open initrc.

Copy-paste 2. above and save.

Don't forget to do 1 above.

Exit and you will be brought back to the login screen.
Toggle F1 to xfce and login.

The xfce.iso is very basic. Best for those who wish to start from scratch (or near enough) and build their custom antiX based distro.

eriefisher is right, thanks __{{emoticon}}__

Also Deach, eriefisher knows a lot more about xfce than I do. I think (s)he uses it on a full antiX too. Ask him/her for tips.

Cam anyone tell me why I can't login/register at the mepislovers forum? I believe (verified by them telling me email already registered ) I have indeed signed up. The name and pass won't work and I can't get them to send me an email thru the"lost password thing"...Can anyone here help me over there? I didn't see a way to ask them unless you were already signed up.I want to try Mepis on a desktop here but I need to be (want to be??) able to get on the forums there. Thanks if anyone that's signed up there can check and let me know what's what. My user name would be the same there.
