How do I make Rox permanent

First, I must say, that so far I am impressed with antix. I have absolutely no experience with linux, yet I found it simple to install it. Also, I was able to connect to my wireless without any problems at all (I have a broadcom 43xx). Anyway, I decided to try Antix to bring an old laptop with a PIII 733 MHz processor and 128 MB RAm back to life (it used to run Windows 2000), and it worked - it is a far more responsive mashine now than before - and probably boots 5 times faster (including the time used by the anti-virus program.

I hope to use this old laptop as an extra laptop for the children, when they are travelling and stuff, so I intend to keep it absolutely free from all files of great importance - it should be a laptop, that the children can bring on the train, without us worrying if it falls into the wrong hands.

I would like to make Rox the permanent window manager. It says in the helptext I have found (under docs):
To make it permanent, right click the .fluxbox/startup file > open as text > and uncomment the last line
But I cannot find this file anywhere. Where should I look?

Which version of antiX are you using?

If you want icewm and rox desktop, you need to do the same edit to the /home/username/ .icewm/startup file.

Oh, and welcome to antiX. __{{emoticon}}__

I can definitely attest to what you are saying. Most of the systems I have now run very well, and I use antiX on them mostly when I am in a hurry. But one of them, a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop system, was well equipped, back in 2000-2001. I got it from Ziff Davis Media in order to perform and write software reviews for them on a freelance basis. The system was partial compensation for the work, plus it enabled me to do additional reviews.

That system originally came with Windows 2000, and it ran well (it did not have Anti Virus software or any other"choke-ware" on it). Later, I installed Windows XP in its place and it worked OK for a while, but the latest service pack was a nightmare to get on it. I have around a 5 GB partition for XP, which at one time was fine, but it is barely enough now, and a large service pack uses up all available space, takes hours to complete, and requires me to remove just about everything in order to get the update completed, then reinstall what I need - which I've pared down CONSIDERABLY!

In contrast, on that same system, I have at least one, maybe two antiX partitions, containing various antiX releases. All of them work just fine, in fact, they are easily the fastest thing on the system at this point. About the only thing installed on the hard drive that comes even close to matching the performance of antiX is Xubuntu, and Xubuntu runs fine, but it is no match for antiX! SimplyMEPIS and sidux also run well, but unless I replace the default window managers with something lighter, they take a while to login and make the desktop available for use. No such problem ever with antiX. So my experience with a system having even a bit more CPU cycles than your system and double the memory (1 GHz CPU, 256 MB RAM) still runs the old stuff, and once logged in, they all work, but they are sluggish starting - no such issues at all with antiX!

Thank you for the welcome and help. I now have Icevm and roxdesktop up and running at the same time. However, the desktop icon to abiword seems to be broken - when I click on it, I get the message:

File doesn't exist, or I can't access it: /usr/bin/AbiWord-2.4

Is that possible to fix? Also, I cannot change the wallpaper when using roxdesktop - is that normal? Finally, I cannot see conky, when using Roxdesktop - I tried moving conky to the top right instead of top left (to avoid competition with the desktop icons, but that didn't solve the problem?

And now, when I am adressing all those little things I can't seem to figure out, myself - is it difficult to install openoffice?

OpenOffice is a breeze to install. If you have synaptic installed, you can right click on OpenOffice, select Mark for Install, then Apply to have the OpenOffice metapackage installed.

From the command line, type

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install openoffice
That is all it takes.

To fix the abiword icon, change the link to
/usr/bin/AbiWord (or better check in /usr/bin what the correct name for abiword is)

Conky doesn't really work with rox-desktop.

To set the rox-desktop background you will have to install the rox wallpaper app

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7023&package_id=21456"
linktext was:"http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... e_id=21456"
====================================
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false

Again, what version of antiX are you using?

/etc/antiX should tell you

According to /etc/antiX I am using:

antiX-M7.5.iso

Release Name: Toussaint Louverture
Release Date: 20 August 2008

In /usr/bin I can find a file called abiword - but when opening it as a textfile it does not tell me anything. If I right-click on the abiword shortcut on the desktop, it says it should open /usr/bin/AbiWord-2.4 Changing that to /usr/bin/abiword makes the abiword symbol change to a non-specific shortcut - and it stille does not open.

I will look into the rox wallpaper link.

Also, when I search Synaptic for openoffice it does show some files (that are all installed), but not openoffice..... It says it lists 1009 packages, 1007 are installed, 0 broken, 0 to install

According to synaptic, I have 1007 packages installed, and it shows 1009 packages - am I using Synaptic wrong?

When I open a terminal and write sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install openoffice it asks me for the user passwrd. When I provide it tells me, that the user cannot install as root. If I instead provide the root psswrd, it tells me it is the wrong passwrd (Synaptic, however, happily open with this root passwrd).

Drag the correct abiword link in /usr/bin to the desktop and delete the old one by right clicking on it and then remove Item.

antiX doesn't use sudo by default.
It should be in a terminal, type su or sux then your root password
apt-get update
apt-get install openofice.org
