This seems like a very basic question, but how do I prevent a wall paper from loading. The wall paper chooser in control centre does not have a"none" option. Perhaps it needs one.

This is an interesting question, and perhaps there should be a"no wallpaper" option.

Another option would be to install Joe's window manager (JWM) and that would be a very plain option with no wallpaper (just solid colors for backgrounds). I have done this in one of my boxes running Antix and it works very well. One drawback is that, although all the apps are listed in the default JWM menu, the menu configuration will have to be redone if one wants it to look anything like the current fluxbox or ice-wm menus in antix.

There's line in the icewm startup files about nitrogen, but I'm not sure that's the right place. I've commented that line out. Wall paper still loads, so obviously I'm missing something.

Have a look in /usr/share/icewm/themes for the theme you use and open the default.theme file and remove the lines something like this:

DesktopBackgroundCenter = 1
DesktopBackgroundImage= '/usr/share/wallpaper/Hard-Rain.jpg'

Thanks. I was just looking for the theme storage location. It dawned on me that the wall papers were sticking to the theme once I removed the nitrogen lines.

Anti, I like that idea as well. I was wondering if 'no background' means black? Would it be possible to set just a solid color from among several choices, much like jwm allows?

"color" is your choice(black,grey etc). Once you find a look you like place the line in a startup file or .xinitrc. A graphical front end would be Gsetroot.
