I haven't updated my main laptop since all the xorg stuff was happening. I'd like to try a dist-upgrade or even just a simple upgrade, and so, I'm curious as to how stable are things these days?

I'd like to NOT mess up this box since it's my main working laptop, and so I'd be willing to wait if I have to. Things are running fine atm.

sid is fairly quiet at this moment in time, though if you have intel graphics card then upgrading xorg is not a good idea.
I am running antiX-sid on my desktop with one problem I noticed today and that is watching apple trailers crashes iceweasel, but watching youtube video is ok.

apt-get dist-upgrade shows what is to be installed exactly?

I don't know exactly what would be upgraded since I haven't tried, but I can try tonight.

I was going to use smxi to upgrade, but are you suggesting to use apt-get instead?

and post the results.

The -s option simulates and doesn't actually install anything

I am not 100% certain that the latest xfce4.6 is complete in Debian and whether it may or may not cause problems with your existing setup.
The likelihood is that most (if not all) will be ok, with 'minor' hitches.
Whether you want to take the risk, is up to you.

Maybe, if you have a test partition, or virtualbox, give it a go and see what happens.

I was surprised to see the xfce stuff in there since I'm not running xfce, or at least, I was not aware that I was, certainly not as a desktop. Any way to find out what is using those xfce files?

Do you use thunar?

Thunar is installed and it runs, but I had never noticed it before. I prefer pcmanfm.

At any rate, I did the dist-upgrade and there was not a major crash, so that's good. I'll keep testing other things.
