I have just tried install antiX M8.5-update (July version) on another computer that is AMD x2 245 with nvidia VGA:

when I get it booted, the resolution is max with 1024x768 so display is poor.

how do I change to better resolution?

I see a lot of kernel that are unique to nvidia, but wonder which is safe to use and how to do it, is that just go through Synaptic like a normal update/install?

In some other experience, after some update, often the system just crash, so I want to be careful on doing it right.

Try booting live and set resolution at boot by hitting F3 to see which one is ok.

Pasting output of inxi -F will give us more info.

As this computer does not have DVD/CD, I downloaded iso to hard disk and boot iso direct from hard disk.

and realise that I could not have a choice on F3.

I am now on this 'Live from hard disk", resolution selection max at 1024x768 , 71 Hz .

did I do anything wrong?

Add xres=1280×1024 to the fromiso line (or whatever screen resolution is supported)

I tried changing the kernel line to have xres=1280x1024, no effect.
then while on another OS I checked displayed was default at 1440x900,
so I change the kernel line to have xres=1440x900, still no effect, it stayed at 1024x768.
any other ideas to try?

Also remove the vga=xxx if you have it.

Tried, remove the vga=791. still no joy.
However, this time I observe something during boot, the display get messed up for 1-2 seconds, then final login display is at 1024x768.
perhaps the nVidia driver is not picked up? or not compatible with the kernel? Just wild guess.

If you have antiX installed, check nvidia drivers are installed ok. ie re-install them using smxi/sgfxi.
