I can't login anymore. After I enter the login and password it says (something like) 'Failed to execute login command' and after a few seconds, returns me back to the login prompt.

I'm not sure what happened. The OS has been running fine for me for a long time now. I have a loose connection to the laptops psu and sometimes it switches off during a session. This might have triggered something to go wrong.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Have you upgraded anything recently?

Reboot and add the nogui cheatcode to grub menu.

It will avoid slim and you will have to type username, password and then startx.

If you get into X check for large files especially /var/log/slim.log

New to AntiX (moved up from very old Mepis distro), and I also can't login from the graphical login screen (nogui cheat works for me). What should I look for in the slim, log file that might explain the error? I should note that graphical login worked perfectly when I was running from live CD. This is frustrating....

Thanks for any help.

Mostly just the size. If the log gets to big it won't allow you to login. I used to get it once a week but have not seen it in awhile, maybe due to updates. Try to delete it and then restart. You must be root.

Code: Select all

rm /var/log/slim.log
