Anyone get sound working on the IBM 600E? It worked for me in MEPIS 3.X, but I can't get it to go in Antix (and yes, I've run alsaconf as root).

Also - slim fails ("failed to execute login script" or some-such error message) but I can startx from a console. Maybe related to the many, many error messages during boot that relate to alsa failures?

Thanks!

I can get sound on my IBM 600E with TinyFlux (and a TinyMe user indicated this works on that distro as well) by becoming root and running alsaconf -l (the -l option forces a probe of legacy cards) then selecting the CS4236 card. Unfortunately this DOES NOT WORK in AntiX. I really want sound - can anyone tell me if I can load an older version of alsaconf and make it work, or suggest a way to get sound up on this machine? Alsa identifies the card as cs46xx, but it really needs the CS4236 driver - a known problems with the IBM 600e (and I think alsaconf run without -l might recognize this, but it still cannot get the card working).

Thanks!

Try this:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Snd-cs4236"
linktext was:"http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Snd-cs4236"

and have a look at this:

Chipsburner's 4-step solution for sound on the IBM 770 worked PERFECTLY for my 600E.

I just set it up 10 minutes ago (simply followed his instructions) so it remains to be seen if any problems develop, but I am happy!

Chipsburner's solution worked until I powered down. Upon reboot I had no sound. Played with it a bit today (alsaconf as root, then reboot) and I had sound, but my pcmcia card modem was no longer recognized. Rebooted to get to the modem and sound no longer worked. If I sort out the details and get both sound & modem working through a power-down I'll post again.

I have a similar issue on my desktop with webcam/sound. If I boot with the webcam plugged in it will work perfectly but no sound. When I reboot without the camera, the sound works perfectly. If I hotplut the cam, both will work, I think(I will have to confirm). This has never been an issue before with other disros so I think it might be in the Mepis kernel????

I used the same pcmcia modem in MEPIS 3.4 on this machine, and had sound working as well. There seemed to be no conflict. I am still hopeful that I can do it with antiX.

After using alsaconf, make sure you do
alsactl restore

I tried alsactl restore as suggested, but it did not seem to change things. If I want to use sound I need to boot with pnpbios=off; if I want to use my pcmcia modem OR my pcmcia wireless card I have to boot without this option. Any suggestions about how to get my pcmcia devices and sound to work together would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
