I had the same problem. I arrived at a working solution with anti's help which is detailed in the thread I listed above.I noticed my USB stick (mp3 player) wont show up in /media if its plugged in before the OS boots. Even if I take it out and stick it in again it still wont show up. But if I stick it in after booting, its noticed!
