I've got antiX 13.1 installed on my secondary desktop machine (it's been turned off almost all the time for years -- Athlon XP 2000+, single core 1.6 GHz w/ 1 GiB RAM and 40 GiB HDD, and was Win98). I like it, it's a nice backup to look stuff up when I'm in the middle of something on the main machine or such -- but I haven't yet been able to figure out how to attach a network share on my MEPIS 11 system, or use the printer attached to that main machine. The three MEPIS systems in the house see each other's shared folders (via SAMBA, though Windows can't find those shares) and all can print to the one printer, but if it weren't for internet access working perfectly, I'd almost be convinced something wasn't working in the antiX networking. I'm sure this is mostly because the interface is so foreign; I can set up shares and connect to them in my sleep in WinXP and Win98, and MEPIS seems to handle things automatically as long as everything is on Linux, but antiX makes me work for it.

As long as you know your share name and ip address of the"server" side system, should be able to mount the network shares in a variety of ways. I personally like connectshares found in Applicaions>System Tools. I've done several videos about it, and how it can be used with the various antix filemanagers, and even the command line.

for basic configuration

This video highlights several possible samba configurations and how to connect to each.

Thanks, I haven't got time to work on it now, but I've bookmarked this post and I'll come back to it in the next few days. It was connectshares I was trying to use, but without automatic discovery, I'm not at all sure I'm getting the share names right (same problem I had trying to access shares from Windows) -- different references give different naming formats, and none of them seem to work.

Connectshares does discover the available shares for you and displays the server ipaddress, workgroup, and share name(s).

The short description is available via the help button in Connectshares-Configuration.

The detailed description is available via the Connectshares User Guide. Download from:
