I have not used Linux or Unix much.

Using a old machine – loaded with antix. I plugged my usb in.... anyway looking like I had to mount the device, I mounted the device and created a icon to desktop. Does that icon only work with what port and specific usb device? Or can I use another usb port and different flash sticks w/o remounting?

How do I set permissions to use the flash stick? I even tried to re-format the device in antix and it will still not let me use it. Can someone explain what I need to do to set permissions?

Then, your usb device should auto-mount (via rox-filer /media). Drag that folder to the desktop, and any usb stick you plug in should auto-mount (hover the mouse over the folder on desktop)

fdisk -l in a root terminal will show how the disk is formatted.

You should mount/unmount using pmount rather than mount

When I mount the flash drive manually, I get the folder icon in the mount window. I can open write and delete from there, when I move the folder to desktop to make link I lose file permission. How do I change permissions?

When you right click on your desktop icon and navigate to properties, what does owner, group show? What is the device formatted as?
