Hi,
Recently installed antix m7.5 but i seemed to have lost all sound eg can view videos in youtube but cant get sound to work also songs"seem" to be playing in XMMS but i cant here anything. I know sound was going when i was using the live CD and i am also fiarly sure that i had sound after installing but not long after that it seemed to disappear. Any suggestions for the sort of things i can check to get sound operational agian. Any help would be much appreciated.

I once lost sound in 7.5 after running the linux mint fluxbox edition livecd. I got it back by running alsaconfig. Go to
control center > hardware > configure sound system
enter your root password and it should do the rest.

#4I had similar problems with my soundcard. If what John suggested does not fix it, I tried this for my sysem (a suggestion from Anti) and worked for me:
Comment out the first line in /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel
and then run alsaconf

Firstly check that sound hasn't been muted via aumix-gtk (in the menu/audio->mixer)

Because I tend to mess around with my systems and move things back and forth, I also found that at times my devices in the /dev directory did not always permit access. One way to check that was to run briefly as root and see if sound works there. If sound works from the root administrator account but not from a user account, that is indicative of other issues as well, usually file and/or directory protection issues. To solve those, I make sure that the audio and video groups are set up to grant group access to all users, then I make sure that all audio and video files use those access groups. That generally fixes another potential class of problems.
The mixer usually takes care of the rest. Anything else is likely to be a kernel module device issue.
That is always the first thing I check, especially with a MEPIS-based system. For several years, Warren always used to remind people to check that the volume levels were set correctly and that the mute feature has not been turned on - thus muting all sound completely. Hi,
Sound is back! As suggested it was just a case of the sound master level being set to zero in aumix. I feel a bit of an idiot for not checking that but thanks for all your help anyway.
