It's likely that the (free and open source) PDF reader built into antiX is slower than the (for profit via promotion of Adobe products even though distributed at no cost, restrictively licensed, proprietary) Adobe reader. I know Okular (the reader I use in MEPIS/KDE) is a bit slower than Reader 10, as well as lacking some features. You can download and install Reader 10 for Linux, if you like; that will give you all the features of the Windows reader and likely load at similar speed (if not a bit faster -- most operations on my system are faster in Linux than in XP, I presume due to lower OS overhead). I don't know how to make that the default application for PDF documents in antiX, but I'm sure someone else here can guide you through that if needed.

Also,
if you haven't already, maybe have a look at the following list of"PDF readers"?

Wonderful -- thanks, whoever you are (Anti, is that you?); Evince opens much more quickly than Okular, has easy zooming, and doesn't default with the side pane open. I'll have to ask over on the MEPIS forum how to make Evince my default PDF viewer.
