I have been playing with the new antiX 14-a4 using the rox-icewm on my MSI S6000. I have noticed that when starting Iceweasel, the cpu pegs at 100% until the window finishes opening. While watching videos, the vids are slightly choppy and the cpu pegs 100%. The cpu idles at about 12%. (With antiX 13.2, I was looking at 6-8% on idle. Very seldom did the cpu exceed 50% when watching videos online.)

The first time around I was using rox-icwwm as my manager and all videos in iceweasel was running the cpu at 100%. This time I was using space-icewm. When watching videos in iceweasel the cpu now hits at 80-85%. If I add another tab to do something else (like typing this in while I have a video running in the other tab), the cpu useage drops to about 40 %. If I tab back to the video, the cpu hits 80-85%.

Could you post the output of inxi -F so we know the specs of the machine.
Are you running live or installed?
Could you try another browser to see if the issue is iceweasel.

I get the cpu stuck at 100% in iceweasel, after a little time.
google chrome sits nicely at 5-20%

hmmmm, i have no slowdown with my faster machines ie core 2 - 1.8 ghz.

i did a stress test on the old p III m 1 ghz with 512mb and had 12 iceweasel tabs open including one with a youtube video. the more i got going, the more overhead it had, but once the pages were loaded all was ok.

mine does not slow down either, but it sits pegged at 99-100% after it has been running for a little while

Can you all check that it is

1) iceweasel that is causing this issue and not any other browser
2) it only happens in iceweasel when video is being played.
3) what if you disable all addons in iceweasel.

I can not find anything particular that cause it, but iceweasel does use (much) more than chrome.
I have tried all the combinations of addons I can think of, and none, but I don't see anything change by doing that.

One interesting thing, is that if you have 2 tabs open, 1 with video, and one a forum index page, the cpu use is only high when you are on the video tab.
So, maybe it is something with graphics? maybe it just uses a weird way to decode or something videos?

I will keep an eye on it.

For me, it's not specific to the browser.
When I tried using the radio app (streamtuner?), it pegged the cpu load (as displayed in conky) and I couldn't even alt+tab
between app windows without tap, tap, fidget, tap delay. Instead of immediately killing the streamtuner process, I let it run several minutes to
see whether it would settle down. Nope.

(as I posted elsewhere) I suspected the jam-ups are due to my PC not dealing well with the non-SMP-aware kernel.
Right now, I'm wondering whether it's somehow network-related though, because I've also noticed ridiculous spikes
(no, not spikes, prolonged periods of full cpu load)
when downloading and installing packages via synaptic. FWIW, yes, same result using cli apt-get.

If you're gonna point a finger at iceweasel, let's all get on the same page for the sake of testing.
Post the URL of a specific youtube page where you've observed problems
(playback of youtube vids should automatically be performed via iceweasel's inbuilt HTML5 player)
and/or the URL of a specific non-youtube page in which playback of the embedded flash content is causing sustained high cpu load.

I do not have any weirdness going on with streamtuner, except that it is set to use audacious.

skidoo, have you tried a different kernel?

We need to find out what is causing the issue. It could be

1. iceweasel
2. graphics
3. kernel
4, other

Testing live with nouveau on my box does not show any problems at all.
Installed with noeveau the same - no problems
Installed with nvidia drivers no problems.

this needs more testing, but on the 3.14.4-antix.1-486-smp kernel, I do not have any issues witrh cpu use, but otoh, I can not shut it down, lol
playing the same youtube videos, I get random short peaks up to 75-80% or so, but it averages around 35-40 or something.
