Hello:

I'm trying to get a Microtek 4850 USB scanner to work under Antix, but it does not seem to be detected. Either scan or scanimage from the fluxbox menu just give the following msg:

Failed to open device `v4l:/dev/video0': Invalid argument

I also tried Open office writer to scan and that did not work either.

From command line, sane-find-scanner does not detect the scanner, even as root.

Should the scanner by listed under /dev/scanner? I'm not sure why the msg I get has to do with /dev/video which is the laptop camera.

Any help will be appreciated.

Best regards,
Pedro

I guess I know what's wrong with the scanner. According to the list of SANE supported devices, this particular scanner is not supported (also other web pages same the same thing).

Too bad.

Thanks.

That sounds like a bad answer.

Continuing with the scanner saga, I connected a HP deskjet F380 (all-in-one printer with scanner) and at least sane-find-scanner does find this particular scanner, however, it's stil not working (scan, scanimage, open office or gimp find the device).

I read that you need to install hplip to get this to work and I tried to install it using synaptic. Synaptic found all that it said it needed but I aborted the installation because I got a message that certain packages were not found (even though they were listed in synaptic).

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Erie, thanks for your suggestion. I managed to install all that hplip needed and then spent a fair amount of time trying to get it to pick up the scanner (had to manually install a ppd). Anyway, it seems to be working fine now, so that's progress.
