I've been getting adventurous and followed Firefox' instructions to upgrade same (from V 45.something) to V50.something. The compressed file came into a different directory than was expected but after moving it to the expected directory (my home dir) the tar command proceeded without error.

But the first time I started the new version (from the Terminal) it gave me a string of 'Failed' errors:

$ pwd
/home/wl/firefox
wl@dv1000-antix1:~/firefox
$ ~/firefox/firefox
  • (firefox:31625): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

    (firefox:31625): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

    (firefox:31625): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

    (firefox:31625): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

    (/home/wl/firefox/plugin-container:31680): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

    (/home/wl/firefox/plugin-container:31680): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

    (/home/wl/firefox/plugin-container:31680): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

wl@dv1000-antix1:~/firefox

Firefox seemed to find a web site right away but I didn't / couldn't think of a test that might throw some light on the errors.

Thoughts/Questions/? Thanks!

By being"adventurous", you've wandered into an uncharted (hence unsupported) scenario.

Within firefox Click"Help" --}"About Firefox"
Take note of the advisement there:
"Updates will come through package manager antiXLinux 16"

Maybe someone else reading this has also"followed Firefox' instructions" and wrestled through whatever problems you've encountered
...but don't hold yer breath waiting, eh.

Probably a theme mismatch error. I get something close to the same with my static seamonkey install in /opt.
I don.t sweat the error message as Seamonkey works OK for me in /opt.

I had to change permissions of the seamonkey folder to user so I could self update it through the help on the toolbar in seamonkey.
If not. I had to run seamonkey as sudo to run the update program.

Running 2 firefoxes is also probably confusing things as you run it from /home. The newer one is probably using the AntiX esr version folder in the ~/.mozzilla. Since 2 folders named the same cannot sit together in a folder.

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~
$ cd .mozilla
harry@biker:~/.mozilla
$ ls
extensions  firefox  seamonkey
harry@biker:~/.mozilla
See. Even though I run my static Seamonkey install in /opt. I have a seamonkey folder now in .mozilla that was made after the 1st time I started up seamonkey. So your firefox install is using the one the esr version made. I would not worry my pretty little head about your error messages. To really clean out old Firefox config files. Would be a long and labour intensive task. More than like;ly start breaking your stuff doing this. But if bored.

Code: Select all

locate firefox
And proceed to delete/rape/and pillage. Then a reinstall after you screw the pooch.

I bet you did not add a Debian compatible firefox experimental repo line to you sources.list. Install newest firefox the Debian way.
So of course you get errors. Then there is no systemd thing to think about. Where doing something the Debian way may be the wrong way in AntiX. Takes some thinking it does.

This is what happens when I ain’t awake yet. I just babble and drool through a post. __{{emoticon}}__
So that is all I have to say on this. Somebody else can pick up the baton..

RESOLVED because I'm going to take the neophyte's way out and step over the mess I made following FF instructions. V50 works and as long as I run it from the icon on my desk top I don't see the errors.

In the meantime I did try the Package Manager but no joss there. The PM seemed to be downloading and subsequently seemed to come to a gentle conclusion but when I tried to run FF using the MENU > Web Browser - V45 started right up. So I'm going to leave that mess behind too and run V50 from the icon.

Thank you both for your talent and forbearance.

the"Web Browser" link in the menu is a shortcut to the default browser according to the desktop-session system in antiX. You can change the preference in Control Center>Preferred Applications.

Ahhh... Great. Thanks! I was getting ready to research how/if I could do that.

I think I need some more research. Firefox-esr.desktop is incomprehensible to me. There's no hint as to how to change that to use V50 instead of V45.

Firefox-esr and firefox coexist. If you want the later version, just use firefox.
