I have Antix 8.5 installed in Virtualbox. I just completed a # apt-get update && apt-get -u dist-upgrade. On reboot, I logged in to KDE; when it finished booting, the screen went blank white. I have the screen icons but no taskbar, nothing at the bottom of the screen.

I remembered it mentioned kdm during the upgrade so I uninstalled kdm and changed to gdm and rebooted. This time I got the gdm login screen, chose KDE, and logged in; it gave me the same white screen.

Something broke during the upgrade but I have no idea what, nor any clue how to start finding out. Help would be appreciated.

Today there were a large number of upgrades listed in Synaptic, so I did another DU. At the conclusion of the DU, it rebooted all the way to the normal KDE screen with icons, theme, and bottom bar. It seems the second DU fixed whatever was wrong with the first. __{{emoticon}}__

I still wonder what happened, if anyone has any ideas.

There was probably a bad package. The deb guys are usually tight on top of things though.

I thought it might have been KDM but apparently it wasn't that. I had the same problem about 2 years back, don't remember the distro or circumstances, so I wondered what it might be. There were error messages about wicd - but they were there when the DU was successful and I didn't see what wicd would have to do with the white screen anyway.
