Hi erie:
I'm having even bigger problems now, since after doing a dist-upgrade back to testing/sid (hoping that going back to my original setup would fix thigns), now I can't get x-server to come up (or slim is messed up). I only get the cli log in.

I already tried copying over the xorg.conf from the live cd and that didn't fix it. sxgfi says my card is not supported. So it's looking kind of bleak at the moment. I guess I can try to back files from my home drive that I want to keep, before I decide to reinstall. I was REALLY trying to prevent exactly this. Oh well.

Thanks anyway.

the problem was with slim. I managed to reinstall slim and configure it more along the lines of AntiX (rather than the default) and things seems to be working ok.

The problem with wireless still persists though.

thanks

/etc/modprobe.d/b43 says

bash: /etc/modprobe.d/b43: Permission denied

thanks

It's a text file.

Code: Select all

leafpad /etc/modprobe.d/b43
copy it and post it here.

Erie:
Here's the output

# by default, the b43 and b44 drivers are disabled and ndiswrapper or wl will try to control a bcm chip
#
# you can enable the loading of b43 or b44 by commenting out 'install b4x true'
#
# to disable autoload of ndiswrapper, you can set ndis=no in /etc/defaults/mepis-network
#
# everything can be set manually, but to avoid confusion it is preferred that you set it
# with the MEPIS Network Assistant

install b43 true
install b44 true
install ssb true

I've been following up on installing the driver from scratch as per the intructions here

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php"
linktext was:"http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php"
====================================
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false

I followed the directions and it did not work. The directions do say that the ssb driver needs to be removed. How do I do that? another rmmod ssb?

thanks

Comment out the last three lines as mentioned and edit /etc/defaults/mepis-network to say ndis=no. Save, exit, reboot, hopefully it will work.

Remember, all this needs to be done as root.

Made the changes and still just ethernet, no wireless.

I noticed that in the file it has NDIS capitalized, but the instructions in modprobe.d/b43 file had it lowercase. could that be it?

# ndiswrapper autostarts at boot (yes,no)
NDIS=no

thanks

Great!! Now it's loaded. I would try ceni to see if you can connect.

Erie, thanks but still neither wicd nor ceni can see the wireless card, just the ethernet card.

Post the output of:

Code: Select all

iwconfig
you must be root.

One more thing. It looks like you have wl loaded. Try to remove it with:

Code: Select all

rmmod wl
Then try and connect again. It could be that the drivers are conflicting. Maybe remove both then load one and try then if not remove both again and load the other.
