After trying Lysistrata on virtual machine plus my boy-friend trying on a AMD K6-2 196Mo ram desktop (try that hang on) I decided to try, and try to adopt Spartacus on my PIII Laptop, with 384 Mo ram and 933 Mhz Intel processor : for one reason, that's the older machine I have personnally, and I would like to learn to handle it well enough to get able to configure a Spartacus for very beginners among friends of mine.

most over, even if a Lysistrata would run fine on it, if I can get to handle Spartacus well enough, the most recent will be easy to get to work too after a few weeks, months.

Additionally, my P III is a little slow with my Archlinux + Xfce4 GUI. :/

So, I tried configure the sound (I'm used to do it with alsaconf and so)


The sound card is a ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro

It appears that it is not configured in the kernel : I find theses lines in /boot/config-2.6.15-27-desktop file :

So I suppose I can try anything to make it sing, unless I recompile the kernel, I won't get one note of music ?

How come there is CONFIG_SOUND set as module and not anything else ? __{{emoticon}}__

I thought I may try to compile alsa-source against the kernel-headers, would you say it is possible to get a result, and if so, how can that be done after getting the alsa-source and the right kernel headers ?

I don't think it's the same thing : would you tell if in Lysistrata the kernel has SND and diverse options that are then available, once it's activated, configured in the kernel ?

I didn't get the sound be it one second, so when I tried to get sure alsa was there and loaded, after the configuration with alsaconf, I invoked a 'lsmod' and didn't find it, I restarted alsa daemon : and the shell returned something like (the right options to ask for, what I did and... ) :"nothing to unload", then,"nothing to load".

I was wondering what was going on, so I started streamtuner from the shell, launched xmms from streamtuner configured to player a radio station with xmms, and looked what in the shell : that was saying something about 'no snd_ something' and 'no snd_pcm'.

That's why I looked up in the kernel configuration file. I did ask two questions in this post : one about the kernel configuration in Spartacus (2.6.15.xx desktop kernel) and the eventual option of compiling alsa against the headers ?

Would anyone know the answers about theses precise details ? __{{emoticon}}__

does not apply to my problem more than the rest, my card is perfectly recognised by alsa when launching alsaconf in Spartacus.

I also have other distributions on that machines, Archlinux, Zenwalk, Ubuntu Hardy, Pardus, all of them having the sound configured and running fine with alsa, so I have no isa card chip problem to solve : the card is a"ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro" on a HP Pavilion N5442 laptop with an Intel motherboard.

Does alsaconf recognise your card? But you are still not getting sound?

Have you set up alsamixer? (Or whatever was used in Spartacus, maybe it was aumix)

Either or, as alsamixer comes by default with any alsa package that respects itself.

Well, I have one and a half million other questions, so to make my problem totally clear and impossible to doubt about, I took a suite of screen shots, with the screen shots tool that's in the menus of fluxbox. __{{emoticon}}__

Then you will see the sound configuration from the beginning until the end, when I launch xmms on a radio station, and all the messages coming out.

This happened to me once (ie that xmms message).
I fixed it by putting in an audio cd and playing it via xmms.
Now I can't remember if I had to configure alsaconf first or not.

alsaconf is a script that detects the sound card and configures the system to load the relevant driver, so I suppose you did, or if not, the installer did it at the end of the install. __{{emoticon}}__

I'm far from knowing all about the subject, so I might try to compile the sources of alsa against the headers first, and I also might try to ask advice from other persons, on a chan maybe ?

I finally found out the distribution needs to have alsamixer invoked as root as well, and not only alsaconf.
