gtk2 theme/icon changes did not recover the text or icons,
is synaptic using qt or something else?

GtK 3 maybe? I have a text / icon missing / illegible on evince and file-roller as well

It uses gtk3 theming.
Title mentions antiX16, but let's be clear -- which version of synaptic?
(asked b/c antiX16 shipped v0.81.2, but if you have selected"testing" repositories, your version of synaptic is probably 0.84.2)

When you experience this issue, what is the name of the selected desktop theme?

I found that someone has reported a similar theming-related bug, affecting v0.84.2, as of Aug 2017

synaptic ver .81.2
no changes to gtk2 theme affects synaptic

synaptic is also producing the error

Could not open file /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.ca.debian.org_debian_dists_testing_contrib_binary-i386_Packages.IndexDiff - open (2: No such file or directory)
