It worked on my laptop but on the desktop machine it goes to a black screen after slim starts.
ctrl-alt-f1 gets me to the console login but I can't get to X at all.

Its with the live cd. It will boot to X on the laptop but on the desktop the X display (ctrl-alt-f7) is black. This is with the full cd.
I haven't burned a copy of the base cd to try yet.

And yes I did try some of the alternate commands from the menu, no luck so far.

The desktop has an nvidia graphics card. I'm also considering plugging into the mb graphics directly to see if that will work.

inxi-f gives (typing this in, there may be typos)

CPU: Single core AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (UP)
cache 512k clocked at 1814.983 Mhz
CPU flags fpu mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow up

Try the no X option.
Then login as demo with password demo then type startx.

(You may want to try the same option, but also add res=800x600 to the menu)

I added runlevel=3 to the command line and it came up ok
Thanks, I didn't notice the f1 for help on the grub menu...

I have had the same happen while running a video card. Once removed the live cd boots right up.

For situations like this it's best to install using the vesa driver and then afterwards install the nvidia or ati driver or even specif the open source driver it that's all you want/need. The vesa driver should boot anywhere.
