On the subject of file managers, no one's mentioned"XNC" (X Northern Captain"..... much like xfe only better (IMHO) and very configurable. It doesn't do thumbnails but apart from that does pretty much everything else. It's also really fast! __{{emoticon}}__

On the subject of"Rox" i never realised just how good & how versatile Rox actually is. Having played around with it quite a bit in antiX, i'm really starting to like it, and with the ability of Fluxbox to do"tabbing" it makes having several instances of Rox really easy.

I'm also just getting into"Rox-Term" at the moment, and is well worth a look if you've never tried it. __{{emoticon}}__

RoxTerm may be just what I've been looking for. Thanks DJiNN.

UnicornRider is still helping (well he is the one writing) the scripts.

antiX will still be as lean and mean as possible, around 300MB.

I'll take a look at your further suggestions.

Well, after spending some time with emelfm2, pcmanfm, thunar, rox, xfe, gnome commander, and mc, I have some thoughts:

1. I like the fact that rox is included - I do use it more frequently than before. Additionally, I like the fact that roxterm may be included. Perhaps other rox apps will be included to complete the rox desktop experience (I even played around with roxsession, but it didn't go so well - looking forward to another go with it).

2. I think mc should be included. It is very powerful and a wonderful app.

3. I still find pcmanfm to be a bit buggy. Thunar is cool, but I don't think it is as powerful as xfe. xfe is very powerful, but as stated it is ugly. Gnome commander does not pull in additional dependencies - I've now tested it out on two boxes. emelfm2 is cool, but as stated needs to be compiled from source, which makes it a hard sell.

So, if anything gets replaced I would think gnome commander could replace xfe.

gnome-commander looks a good alternative to xfe. It looks nicer, is fast, smaller and as an alternative 2-pane filer to rox it is a good choice.

It will be rox, mc and gnome-commander.

I'll try out some more rox apps too.

WMs to be included:

Well, I keep trying to go back to icewm - just when I think I like it, I don't. I also don't really like e16 or e17 and I couldn't get into fvwm.

I do like fluxbox and after playing around with openbox, I really like it too.

I guess I have a few ideas:

1. keep only fluxbox.
2. keep fluxbox and icewm.
3. have antix be *box distro: include all the wm's.
3. include fluxbox, icewm, and openbox.
4. include fluxbox and openbox.

Choice 4 is my favorite. My second favorite is #1 - let the user decide if they want other environments. Besides, there are plenty of posts here and at mepislovers to help them get started with their new desktop.

I'd like to see the use of the 2.6.18 kernel, or having that as an option. antiX is supposedly a good distro for old hardware, and it would be a shame if people are unable to use it because antiX is using a new kernel that doesn't work properly on a lot of older hardware.

The way I see it, the kernel that's used by the liveCD and gets installed on the HDD should be one which has good compatibility with a wide range of hardware. The end user can always install a different kernel later using apt-get, if he/she so desires.

I'll probably use OU812's first suggestion ie keep only fluxbox and remove icewm.
I have nothing against icewm, nor openbox, but I think if an alternative to fluxbox is to be included it should be something from a 'box, ie icewm.
A 'problem' with openbox is that it is more difficult to set up than fluxbox, more difficult to edit too, and in my tests, doesn't run any faster than fluxbox. Remember you can remove the fluxbox taskbar if you wish to get a totally clean desktop.

pcalvert, why the 2.6.18 kernel in particular?
