At the moment antiX is flexible enough to be used in 3 main ways.

1. As is. If you only want to upgrade the apps already installed in antiX, then it should be fine just to do a regular
#apt-get update
#apt-get upgrade

2. Bleeding-edge. antiX can be used with the Debian Sid repos. If you want bleeding-edge and like to live in the fast lane (on my box, it is noticeably faster and more responsive), adding the Sid repos is for you.
But, before antiX will work as a Sid distro, a few other changes are needed. Firstly, you will need to do a dist-upgrade with all repos enabled (Mepis, Debian Etch, Lenny, Sid)
You will notice that some apps will be held back and maybe some will be removed. After this do
#apt-get update
#aptitude dist-upgrade

and accept the first suggestion (unless it rips out antiX)

Once that has finished, do a check of
#apt-get update
#apt-get dist-upgrade

and you'll see that there are no or only a few held-back apps.

Then, comment out the Mepis, Stable and Testing repos.
#apt-get update
#apt-get dist-upgrade
[note: using aptitude in Debian Sid is not recommended]

You should find that everything will work ok and apps should be able to be installed without dependency problems.

If you choose the Sid route, I suggest you dist-upgrade regularly, but keep an eye on what is being installed, removed etc. A great place for this information is the sidux forums.

3. If 2 has you worried, and 1 seems too 'conservative', this is the best option for you. Keep the repos as they are to do an initial
#apt-get update
#apt-get dist-upgrade

After this do
#apt-get update
#aptitude dist-upgrade
and accept the first suggestion (unless it rips out antiX)

Then disable the Mepis repos, and regularly
#apt-get update
#apt-get dist-upgrade or #apt-get upgrade

Hello. I believe I am doing option #3. After doing an upgrade, I accepted the new sources.list config file. I then added in the newly missing files from the original sources.list (with help from anti). I did an update and upgrade after that (using synaptic) and the only thing removed was pidgin; everything else was added or upgraded. After that I installed fvwm-crystal, but needed to disable the mepis repo first. So far everything is well. Good choice for me.

OK, I am doing option #3.

After removing the Mepis repositories for the final upgrade, do I then re-enable the Mepis repos as a final step?

I run sid/unstable, occasionally enabling the mepis repo to check for updates. It was tough at first but now everything has settled down.

I have an old desktop I've been running Sidux on. I'm wondering if you guys are having pretty good luck with the sid repositories. Any comments? Also i see"testing" in my sources list no mention of sid but I think I saw a post where someone only had sid in their sources.list. If i wanted to go to sid what would be the best way to do this? I'm really enjoying antix on this old beast. I've installed Mepis on a 600 mhz machine and it's ok but I think I might try antix on there too.

Any comments welcome/appreciated. Thanks.

There are a few antiX users using the sid repos. Me for one with no real problems at all.
If you do use the sid repos I suggest checking into the sidux forums for any warnings with upgrades.
Also use apt-get for upgrading rather than synaptic.

I use the sid repos only and the only issue I have seen is a package may get removed that you want/need or a package won't update for some reason. Both issues are usually fixed within a couple of days. At the moment I have I package that refuses to upgrade--wvdial--but I don't use it so I don't care.

ok...I have been there and read some also. Can anyone post what my sources.list should look like? I"m not seeing"sid" on there only unstable (which I know is sid). I"m not sure if that's the sid you are talking about or not. Also I"m guessing that enabling all would mean stable testing and unstable in my current list? I recall seeing a post where someone's list actually said"sid" and not unstable I think. Thanks everyone.

I think sid is just an alias for unstable. Here is mine.

Get yourself completely updated and current including mepis then comment out all of them and uncomment the sid.

Code: Select all

apt-get update
and then

Code: Select all

apt-get upgrade
This should bring you to a current sid base.
