anti, I haven't been able to use ceni at all on the alpha. One of my machines uses the driver that the link you reference uses.

according to some research, actually originally done by silent_observer, the module in question is provided by linux-wlan-ng package for prism wireless cards. According to the package description, the drivers included there have been integrated into the mainline linux kernel sometime during the 2.6 kernel days. The description says its unlikely anyone actually needs the package. I sense a conflict here, so I removed the package, and ceni returned to normal operation.

***edit*** looks like that package has been uncessary since 2.6.31. I bet the old package no longer works with the 3 series kernels.

linux-wlan-ng is a set of drivers and utilities that is intended to provide the full range of IEEE 802.11 MAC management capabilities for use in user-mode utilities and scripts. as to roky's wicd problem, it looks like dbus wasn't running. and wicd-client will not operate without dbus running. the antix=LX line in the boot parameters does something to prevent dbus from running, or at least communicating with wicd, as removing the antix=LX line restored wicd function for me. This was when running live...I thought the lean and mean parameters should have been removed on install.

so ceni and wicd, likely two different problems, conspiring with roky's dogs so that he would go play with them more today. __{{emoticon}}__

Wasn't dbus to automatically start at boot anyway? If there was some boot option that suppressed dbus then yes it should be removed. When Rocky comes back maybe this info can identify if that stray boot parameter is the cause of his wicd woes.

I think its the wicd-daemon not starting, rather than dbus. the dbus-daemon is running with defaults, but wicd isn't. it is supposed to autostart when you run the client, but it will ask for the root password when that occurs. at least, its supposed to.

just noticed that roky tried running wicd-gtk as root using gksu. Don't do that, it will crash the wicd daemon and you'll get a ton of dbus errors. just run it as a regular user and it will ask for a root password to start the daemon .

Ahh missed that as well...so all anyone should do to start wicd is to start as user, then the app will prompt for the root password to start the daemon. How to get wicd to start at boot so the network comes up then?

if you remove the antix=LX from the boot parameters, it will start at boot time, on the live media. the daemon should start automatically on an installed system.

if you want the little icon in the notification area, you can add"wicd-client &" to the appropriate startup file.

The antiX= should have been removed automatically during then install but even if it wasn't, it has no effect on an installed system. Since roky said his was a full install, I did not pursue this. The"D" parameter turns off dbus. The"M" parameter now turns off networking for real (as of antiX-14-a3 or antiX-14-a4). I hit the same problem roky is suffering and this led me to figure out we needed to remove the"M" parameter from antiX=. The change occurred when we moved most of the live /etc/init.d/ scripts into the initrd. This allowed"M" to really disable networking.

I think you can replicate roky's problem if you add the"M" parameter. I tried it here and ceni still seemed to work (?) but wicd gives a warning about not being able to connect to ***wicd's*** dbus interface.

I routinely use wicd here with antiX=LX. OTOH if you use the"D" parameter then the window manager won't start so you can't even try to use wicd. So if roky is using the Live system then my bet is he is using the"M" parameter, which turns off networking.

Soooooooooooo. I guess I'll blow away this install. Now that I have documented how I can fix the graphics issue if it comes up. The reason I should re-install? Because I have on my own, tweaked stuff from online suggestions from arch and ubuntu and debian suggestions. I may have scrambled eggs for a install now. So time to start freah.

Oh yeah. The 'gksu wicd' thing was because when you use the antixcc. Wicd asks for your password to access
your network cards. I was exploring different routes and though gksu might help.

As far as dbus deamons and wicd deamons. To hell with them. I just checked ~./dbus properties.
Everyone could execute. Only owner could write.
So a reinstall it is.

IBM T23 on back burner. M&A Companion Touch netbook arrived via Fed Ex since my last post.
I bumped the ram from 1 gig to 2.

To anyone reading this with one of these. There are 2 paper circle caps covering the access panel philip
screws. Pry them out. Remove the screws. Then slowly pop out access cover . Now you can change ram
or hard drive. I bumped mine to 2 gig of ram from 1 gig.

Touchscreen works guys with Pen and Finger. I can open items on menu or taskbar or scroll the windows.
The touchpen has no buttons like on my Dell XT2 which act as mouse buttons. Just a passive touch screen
with a plastic pen from the looks of things.

Looks good for installing. Screen resoluton good. Wicd connected wireless OK. Touchpad and sound works. Looks good for OOTB compatibility. Figured some nice news needed in this thread.
Before installing this on here. I will reboot and make sure LX cheats are removed. I just booted
blind without touching any F keys on this post.

So the IBM T23 will be on simmer today. Sorry.

Usb ports mounting ok though so a SD card reader to usb suffices for me.

I Made a ext 4 extended parttion and named it /data. But / etc/fstab did not make a entry for it during the install process.

Slitaz mountbox in antixcc>disks>mount drive works ok to mount /data after I made a directory in /media named date eg: /media/data. So I can live with that also. I used chown to give permisson to copy over stuff to /data .

Watching movie while in tablet mode with Gnome Mplayer. Mplayer2 works good also.
Not too many bugs on this hardware. Guvcview picked up the webcam also.
Nice day out. So done testing for today. Bad weather coming in for the weekend.

One question (not just to roky). d.o mentioned that linux-wlan-ng is probab;y not needed. Could users test this out.

Is prism2-usb-firmware-installer needed?

On this IBM T23. I threw off all of prism I could find like I posted earlier. This is a new fresh install by the way,

OK. Just for info. I started with my PLOP CD and my AntiX patched 5 live usb drive.
I picked Vesa from F key menu as graphics and eliminated antix=LX from boot menu
and typed in vga=1024x768 and crossed my fingers.

I booted up to 1800x1200 or whatever screen vesa gave me. But I got through the installer OK even
with the oversize screen. Still using grub4dos bootloader on mbr of hard drive and antiX grub installed to / instead. Rebooted.

Desktop comes up 800x600 resolution and cpu is 100% so I do a quick ass check on video driver and I find
I am running the save driver. Even though I picked vesa on live session. Like I say. Just info.

I reboot into cli boot and su to root instead of logging in to the desktop.
I remove the savage driver. (See above posts). I try and install vesa but am told the vesa driver is already installed. I reboot.

I login through slim. My resolution is now 1024x768 and my cpu is calm and quiet. No hammering.
Ram use is low also. My God. I think I found out how to bypass the Savage chip bug install.

I connect through Wicd just fine now. My previous tweaks probably screwed up the deamons. Hence the re-install for proof of concept/idea. Glad I was thorough. Like mentioned earlier. All p80211 stuff should be gone on this rig. I did not try ceni though as I was more curious about the Wicd situation and am a happy camper it connected.

While posting, fully updated"apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade". I downgraded flash already to 10.3 because this is a Pentium 3 laptop. Youtube defaulted to html 5 so I play youtube that way on this laptop
because Iceweasel supports html5. Only a mouse click on youtubes site to tell it to use html5 as default player.

My addon pcmcia usb 2.0 card is picked up OK. Sound and everything looks OK on this laptop

Good you got everything working for the most part on the T23 now. As you most likely had a rather old install and your tweaking over the years has apparently messed up wicd and whatever else. Not sure if there's any fixed savage driver out there, but at least vesa worked for you. As I might reinstall antiX on my T23 as well I'll be sure to remove the savage driver as it's broken on the more recent Xorg versions.
