For those of you helping out with testing, apply the a5 patch to the a4 iso you downloaded.

Patch and md5sum files here:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/Testing/"
linktext was:"http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/Testing/"
====================================

xdelta patch is c 180MB.

Download the delta patch to the same diretory as where you have your a4.iso and patch like this"

Code: Select all

xdelta3 -d -s fromfile patchname.delta tofile

eg

xdelta3 -d -s antiX-14RV-a4.iso a4-a5.delta a5.iso

This bringd the live iso to using 3.18.1-486-smp kernel and 99.9% systemd-free! No libsystemd0 and includes nosystemd debs for cups, gvfs etc.
The iso should just fit on a cd - you might need to overburn.

Please test and give feedback.

Downloaded delta and created new a5 iso.

Command used for a4 full was

Code: Select all

 xdelta3 -d -s antiX-14-a4-RV_386-full.iso a4-a5.delta
Resulting iso is exactly 700 mb.(734003200 bytes)

For whatever it's worth, I was unable to get a verified burn on a cd....... no problem at all on a dvd.

Due to the kernel change, the patch cannot be applied from a live persistence session, right?

you can run the xdelta3 on the a4 iso to make the a5 from the live session, but you'll have to make a new liveUSB.

roxterm --} sudo apt update && apt install lxterminal
then switch between"alternate desktops" and note that no new menu entry has been created for lxterminal
(in any of the menus) via the scripted post-install trigger. (bug)

===========

behavior different from prior build (bug, or by design, idunno):
Running"update menu" command in fluxbox session update ONLY the fluxbox menu.
Running"update menu" command in iceWM session update ONLY the iceWM menu.
Running"update menu" command in JWM session update ONLY the JWM menu, AND does not take effect until JWM is restarted

===============================

In JWM menu, visit the"Themes" flyout and note the bottommost entry labeled"Restart".
If you use the"update themes" command in that menu, the bottom menu entry in"themes" flyout submenu disappears.
Afterward, the new bottom-most entry is"white"... and that"Restart" menu option remains absent, even after restarting a session.(bug)

===============================

Have keybinds been changed for this build?
New mappings or I just never noticed... today the plain Fkeys are launching filemanager, roxterm, browser....
and (apparentl in logfiles) something related to keymappings is wrong/buggy

For example:
I'm seeing F2(rename) in the spacefm menu, and spacefm obviously has mouse focus
but F2 opens gexec instead.
This misbehavior is _consistent_ across iceWM/JWM/fluxbox: F2 opens gexec dialog

Another example:
After launching alsamixer, need to press F6 to select hardware device.
Although alsamixer window has focus, F6 keypress is intercepted and antix screencapture util is launched.

At some point in changing between"alternate desktops", something got hung up (conky showing constant 60%+ cpu load).
htop showed 2 processes each causing 50%+ cpuload:
usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp /var/run/slim.auth vt07
and
fbxkb
I decided"caint hardly kill slim, can i?" and killed the fbxkb process.
Wheeee, as I discovered later, that event spewed 467Mb worth of errors to .desktop-session/log.
(trimmed logfiles are attached to my later post here)
^---v
When I initiated shutdown, persist save ran successfully within the desktop session...
...then when it ran again in console (I had not previously regarded this 2x as a bug, it's built into the live-init shutdown & I welcome it as a failsafe measure)
I glimpsed a"purple text" error code 11 message before the pc switched off.
-=-
Hmm, I guess this is bad & needs to be considered as a bug.
If the persistence save a few seconds ago was successful, really the shutdown script should check the datestamp (or something) and not retry persist-save.
If the secondary (live-init shutdown script) persist-save MUST run, it should not be generating an"rsync error 11: not enough space" error.

===============================

second boot...
persisted content is fine.
custom boot line successfully saves the parameters.
KEYBIND WEIRDNESS IS STILL THERE.
-=-
Same result after"re-burning" the patched ISO to a different pendrive.
Idunno ~~ the downlowded patch and md5sum matched.
-=-
(I'm back revising this post after ultimately re-downloading ISO and patch and starting afresh)
KEYBIND WEIRDNESS IS STILL THERE.

other jotted notes (before I lose/forget 'em):

Mentioned earlier, due to theme colors... can't recognize unticked checkboxes (can't see a border or a differing background color inside the checkbox element)

"root's editor" preference is not configured in spacefm config.

With the the a5 build, I'm still noticing"ghost rectangles" when dragging desktop application windows
(I always test using the autoselected default noveau driver)
Shhh... not worth chasing as a bug

Are we supposed to be seeing"brit icons" applied to spacefm for sudo/root ?
Compared to other theme (or non sudo?) an extra/unexpected icon is displayed
(brit icon: red/black/white concentric circles inside a sort of"tilted raindrop" shape)
There's no tooltip text for the icon, and clicking it {cross yer fingers} seems to have no effect.

not consistently repeatable:
During shutdown, while the cli persist-save was asking y/n, I was able to reach an Alt+f2(?) console, but
my keystrokes were ignored at the"antiX login:" prompt

The JWM menu lacks a"Run..." menu entry

I have not tested on my IBM T23 yet skidoo. Maybe this weekend. Just curious. Did your md5sum match mine when you patched into a5 completely before installing to usb?

Sound works. Tap on touchpad Works. I had to disable flashblock for youtube to work. Clicking on video with flashblock enabled would not start.
Not a AntiX issue. Probably something else causing this. So just a observation.
Wireless through WICD as usual for me with wpa2 encrypted wireless.
Nice touch adding wlan0 up/down graphs to conky automagically after connecting with WICD wirelessly.
I will be moving on later to the P3 IBM T23 laptop next to see if things improved with driver for graphics in 3.18 since I posted in the a4 thread about it.

@skidoo
If you use the"update themes" command in that menu, the bottom menu entry in"themes" flyout submenu disappears.
Not in mine. I hit update themes and checked in JWM and restart stayed and worked. I checked it. I run no persistence or install though right now.
Just a live usb.
Have keybinds been changed for this build?
New mappings or I just never noticed... today the plain Fkeys are launching filemanager, roxterm, browser....
on mine
F1 = Terminal
F2 = Gexec
F3 = RoxFM
F4 = Open Iceweasel session
F5 = Open antixcc (control center for antiX)
F6 = Open screen shooter
F7 = Pressing F7 turns Caret Browsing on or off. This feature places a moveable cursor in web pages, allowing you to select text with the keyboard. Do you want to turn Caret Browsing on?
F8 = Nothing happens/ Nada
F9 = same as F8
F10 = open file in Iceweasel tool bar
F11 = Full Iceweasel screen > Hit F11 again to escape from full screen
F12 = Page properties in browser/icewesel page you are in currently.
After launching alsamixer, need to press F6 to select hardware device.
Although alsamixer window has focus, F6 keypress is intercepted and antix screencapture util is launched.
Yep. same happens to me.

I gotta go. So I can't test other things you mentioned skidoo. sorry.

__{{emoticon}}__ Sad. No love again on my IBM T23 P3 Laptop. Default boot pegs cpu in conky at 100 % and scrambles screen till it freezes up the laptop and locks up the mouse.

Safe graphics semi scrambled screen and cpu is also running hard.

Vesa graphics OK but resolution again at 1600x1200 and using antixcc>session>screen resolution to 1024x768 gives a scrambled screen.

Good news is it boots OK with 3.18 kernel. I guess savage graphics is suffering kernel depreciation?

@anti. I even pulled out a 30 gig ide hard drive so to install a5 if I had a good live session run.
I guess cli installer needs a ethernet cable hard line and not wifi.

I carved up the drive to
ext3 > 6gig>sda1> Tahr Puppy 6 Frugal install >grub4dos for bootloader.
ext3 > 19.99gig"/"> sda2> ready for a5> was going to install grub to root instead of mbr and use grub4dos to chainload antiX grub2 bootloader.
swap> 2 gig > sda3> since this P3 only has 1 gig of ram.

But no luck getting a good gui in any desktop environment during a live session so I can run the graphical installer. This is round one for this laptop tonight. Maybe round 2 I will try the frugal install to /dev/ sda2 tomorrow which will be breaking virgin territory for me also.

Maybe things will improve with a install vs a live session. I don't know, but what the hell. I am always
up for something during testing. I could install on a P4 single core like I did before on the Emachine 3507.

But I thought the point was to get these P3 laptops running.
Anyhows. That is my savage, savage graphics report tonight.
