There are a lot of desktop options and boot options at the very beginning of Antix12 can someone give me a simple explanation of what each means, please? Icewm - Fluxbox - Icewm- nouveau; boot options: quiet - noorg - nomodeset - nouveau.modeset. Thanks!

You forgot to mention Icewm-rox and fluxbox-rox __{{emoticon}}__

Quick Tips

Login as 'demo', password = 'demo'.
For root access, password = 'root'. Please do not login as root. It is totally unnecessary.
Use 'sux' rather than 'su' when opening GUI apps as root in a terminal.
Sudo is not configured by default. antiX is not Ubuntu!
To boot from floppy, I suggest SmartBootManager.
antiX can also boot from an .iso file on a hard-drive. Boot from iso on hard-disk This is very fast.
antiX can also be installed as a livecd to usb. Using a live-usb-cd is very fast.
This site is under construction. For questions, comments, please use the antiX forum or the antiX forum on MepisLovers
There is also a lot of information suitable for antiX in the MEPIS wiki.

We still have some more work to do on the Antix wiki to get it current with the new AntiX 12. So be patient with us as we are not a big organazation like Ubuntu or Open Suse. For starters.

Try the defaultt boot first. If you don't like it. Reboot and try Icewm-no icons. Then reboot and try Fluxbox. then reboot and try Fluxbox-no icons. The nouveau is the kernel driver for Nvidia cards and is already in the boot kernel line so no need to use the noveau option, You can log out of any Desktop you boot also instead reboot and try out the other Window managers also likr JWM. Just use the F1 key at login screen (the pretty Antix Slim login window splash screen) to select what window manager you wanna try out. __{{emoticon}}__

As your ole' buddy Roky says, just hang with us. Looks like he's doing an awesome job leading you in there. But if things appear to be overwhelming, don't let them be. Simply following instructions, it's not that hard, even if you do not completely understand what is going on. If something gets off course, stop and ask us, and give descriptions in detail on what's happening.

I wrote a tutorial on how you can even install antiX core from scratch. It's a bit dated, so no longer 100% accurate in every detail, but it's a good cookbook. But I think what Roky has been guiding you with ought to do just fine.

Again, if any particular area overwhelms you, just pause, and take your time. If you want to understand something that is confusing, ask questions, and if our answers are too complicated, just tell us where the confusion is, and we'll try to further simplify it.

There is a point in time where everything is confusing, even overwhelming, then there comes a time, all of a sudden, when it starts to make real sense. But some of us have been doing this kind of thing for decades; we have a bit of a head start to the process. It doesn't take decades to know things well enough to get by, but one or two evenings reading documentation can sure help, and if you read once or twice a week for a few months, you'll know plenty, more than most people.

It took a while but here I am using Iceweasel at AF! I want to thank Roky and the members here for your help but I am going to need a lot more of it. The first two things I need to get done is to find out if there is an easier way to hook up to the internet, such as an icon in a desktop toolbar? I also need to know how to install a Seamonkey browser to use on the Internet. After that I need to know how to get my Geforce 6200 graphics card working. Do I need to go to the HP website for the driver for my printer or can I get it from Antix?

Well, I have had good luck using wicd, which is pretty easy to use, and also ceni, which is not so nice looking, but when it is setup, you are not going to look at it much anyway.

If you look down in the right lower corner of the screen, next to the clock, there should be an icon for wicd.
Are you using wireless, or wired internet?
If you are on dialup, I really don't know if wicd works, but if it is a problem, let us know, and someone on here will help.

You can open the antixcc, it is on the bar at the bottom (the icon with a wrench and screwdriver) then click the network tab, then try the different ways to connect from there.

good luck!

Rust i used the control center to set up my dial up serial modem but I have been spoiled by Ubuntu where all I had to do was to turn my external modem on and I would be connected to the internet automatically. By the way I'm very glad to be here!!

So, you used the"configure dial-up connection" button in antixcc?

I am sorry, but I have not used dialup...ever...
However, I am pretty sure there is a way to make it remember your settings, and start it when you boot the machine.

I see a few boxes you can mark, like the remember password, and auto-reconnect. Have you tried playing with those?

In order for my printer driver to be installed I need to disable the CD sources list in apt sources.list
How do I do that, please? Thanks!

Slow down Bro. One thing at a time. My ISP is acting up again so sometimes I am online and sometimes I am down. So I will be here intermittantly because of that.

I installed Iceweasel Roky! I have to" mount" the floppy in order to use it. sudo does not seem to work; what is used in its place?
The grub menu list sees my suse 10 but it will not enable it, can I change that? Sorry for the deluge of questions!!

Umm, Iceweasel is already installed in antix?

So, you are running it live from the cd?

I believe sux is the antix version of sudo.

Rust I installed Antix into my computer. Can I install Fluxbox in another partition next to it?

fluxbox is already installed, iceweasel is a web browser, I guess you were thinking of icewm?
In the box you enter the username, and password.(slim) to log in, press the F1 button, to toggle thru the different window managers
If you don't touch anything, you get icewm-rox, then IIrc, you get fluxbox, then jwm, and so on...

Anyway, I am not quite sure I get what you mean, when you say you have to mount the floppy, to use iceweasel(which I would guess is icewm?)?

Oh, can you copy and paste exactly what menu.lst says?
