I just got my AntiX12 CD in the mail today and I've have already set aside a partition on my hard drive for it. I have a new GeForce 6200 graphics card in my old HP a532x computer that has not been configured as yet. I want to configure it to Antix after i have gotten AntiX onto my computer and am able to connect to the internet. I do not know a thing about Antix and very little about computers so I hope that I do not irritate anyone. Can anyone please give me some pointers on how to install AntiX correctly? Thanks!

Welcome from me as well. As it is the early hours here in Greece, I'll leave it to all the competent users here to help you out.
Have fun with antiX!

We will worry about the
new GeForce 6200 graphics card
after the install Cuz. You are going to be using command line instead of gui like you did in Ubuntu or Open Suse. We will have to teach you smxi and sgfxi for that video card later.

Hopefully. This will give you a general idea of what a install procedure looks like. Don't follow my how to literally. Just install to root (/). Just look at the pretty pictures.

You said you made a partition for it. Point the installer to it with the drop down arrow.

IIrc, there is a point where it ask if you want to install using the entire disk (answer no! or.. just don't allow that)
Then there is an option to install using existing partitions, or some such, which is what you want.

Yes, if you just install without reading before clicking, it can wipe out everything.

I have 4 installs on this box cuz. Semplice, 2 Antix's, and Macpup. So just be careful. You'll only wipe your installs if you make a mistake.

Code: Select all

# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 60 GB, 60052769280 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7301 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1               1        3213    25808391   83  Linux
Warning: Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2   *        3213        7204    32057707   83  Linux
Warning: Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda3            7204        7302      787185   82  Linux swap
Warning: Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary.

Disk /dev/sdb: 40 GB, 40015987200 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1               1        1167     9373896   83  Linux
/dev/sdb2            1168        4723    28555537   83  Linux
/dev/sdb3            4724        4865     1132582   82  Linux swap

Warning:

Seems to be my code of the road. __{{emoticon}}__

I see you're in the middle of helping cousinlucky get antix12 installed to harddrive so I hope this isn't a bad time to post this.

With Wheezy it's fairly easy now to install the Debian nvidia dkms driver using apt-get and without leaving X. This example was done with AntiX-M12-full which has the kernel headers and build-essential preinstalled. I'm not sure if base or core have them preinstalled or not, if not they would need to be installed before running the steps below.

You can jump in anytime kmathern. I highly respect your Linux skillset. I have known cousinlucky for years now. We are buddies from way back. He is a Open Suse/Ubuntu user who is still learning the ropes in using Linux. So feel free to jump in anytime.
