Putting swap partition on the outer edge of a disk is supposed to speed it up, might make a little bit of difference for you (next time you install).

suggested tweaks for controlPanel:

add .fluxkeys to the group of files opened for editing via the"controlCentre...edit fluxbox files" button
(and expose the equivalent JWM + IceWM keybind files via their similar buttons)

consider displaying labeltext"system monitor (Conky)" instead of just"system monitor" which seems a bit too vague.

Its just keys and it opens with that CC button already (actually all three wm buttons). If you've got too many tabs for your screen, look for a little arrow to scroll the tabs.
consider displaying labeltext"system monitor (Conky)" instead of just"system monitor" which seems a bit too vague.
I think that is a good idea as well.

"keys"
sure enough, it's already there {facepalm} so...
thank you !
and YOU !

Both as demo user and as root, with default (MediterraneanWhite) theme...
in additon to synaptic, unticked checkboxes are borderless (and essentially invisible) in these preinstalled apps:
transmission-gtk (torrent app)
roxterm
gnome-mplayer

not a"bug", just unexpected / undocumented:
in the desktop menu,
Applications --} Games --} gweled does not launch
does not launch (and no error is logged) if its sound options are enabled, as they are by default... and no sound device is available

Good catch. They actually have all the same incomplete themeing issues synaptic has, so almost certainly some sort of gtk version conflict going on between the affected apps and the currently installed themes.

I tried themes in the gnome-theme-extras package as well, and at least Unity and Darklooks do not work correctly either. So far out of the installed themes, these 5 work correctly (same list as from the synaptic thread). albatross, greybird, Raleigh, clearlooks and bluebird

this post is specific to testing MENU MANAGER

When / how often is use of the the top-level"Update Menu" item advisable or necessary?
(asking because I can't fully recall)
-- after manually installing a program (b/c dpkg post-install and"antiX update menu" hook isn't triggered in that case)
-- after manually creating a .destop file, or editing an existing .desktop file, or manually deleting an existing .desktop file

Because I haven't yet needed to use"Update Menu" while testing this build, but HAVE repeatedly used Menu Manager
(which is currently accessible via Menu --} Applications --} Preferences --} Menu Manager
seems it would be more convenient to have"Menu Manager" at top-level (and relegate"Update Menu" to the Preferences submenu).

As is, the"Menu Manager" launcher is initially displayed under"Personal" submenu (first-run, and until an item is added to"Personal").

problem: it's counter-intuitive to click a launcher pathed under"personal" when user really wishes to amend"applications" submenu

problem (bug): after adding an item to personal, then deciding to remove it, user is presented with a do-nothing item under"personal", labeled"retry".
edit: onHover.... fluxbox menu displays"retry"; JWM menu displays nothing (no flyout for empty submenu); IceWM shows a thin glitchy rectangle
Unless user is aware of the presence of an alternative launcher via controlCentre --} Desktop (tab) --} Edit Menus
(note: the differently labeled name is a further point of potential confusion)
at that point the user is relegated to discovering/using Menu --} Applications --} Preferences --} Menu Manager

wishlist feature: dialogbox displaying static text"just a moment, searching available items..." during the awkward startup delay

wishlist feature: On the"ADD to Applications menu" screen, I would appreciate seeing in advance which category(ies) an item will be added into

When attempting to customize (and experiment, toward"reducing the startup memory footprint")
I've repeated wound up"painting myself into a corner" by messing with controlCenter --} System (tab) --} Choose Startup Services
After nixing bluetooth (or whatever) from all runlevels... later, can't recall (and didn't jot a note) which runlevels (3,5,6?) its needed.

follow the bouncing ball...
Q: what file is edited by controlCenter --} System (tab) --} Choose Startup Services ?
A: /var/lib/sysv-rc-conf/services

Q: Where, on ro-mounted fs (live session) can I find distro-original copy of that files? (to serve as a baseline reference)
A: Using cli"findmnt" command, I note that the only ro mounted item is (source) /dev/loop0 (target) /live/linux

Q: Oops, NO COMPARABLE FILE EXISTS (nor parent directory"sysv-rc-conf"). maybe it is created at runtime?
A: YES, CONFIRMED. IT IS CREATED AT RUNTIME.

I guess I'll need to boot using the default, non-persistent, boot menu line, run the utility which generates the"service" file,
then copy the file back to the pendrive, and save that as a reference copy.
suggestion:
It would be helpful if the build process would generate a baseline file to serve as reference /var/lib/sysv-rc-conf/services.original

You've got it. Manual operations require the update menu step. Dave's hooks in the apt-get system cover most everything else, and MenuManager calls the update script automatically at the end of the operations.

{surprised} In this build, I can't find"urxvt" exposed anywhere in the menu, nor in controlCentre --} Tools

1)"man update-rc.d" says it has a"default" option as in:

Code: Select all

update-rc.d bluetooth default
2)

Code: Select all

head / etc/init.d/bluetooth
#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: bluetooth
# Required-Start: $local_fs $syslog $remote_fs dbus
# Required-Stop: $local_fs $syslog $remote_fs
# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6
# Short-Description: Start bluetooth daemons
### END INIT INFO
#
3) OTOH, I believe update-rc.d has changed (in the past year or so) and these changes may have affected the tool you have been using to control services.
