ie: network interfaces

I cannot duplicate samK's issues with the network interfaces not picking up. I've now tried 3 pc's and a VB install on a fourth machine. In all cases, the wired interface was picked up automatically, as long as the interface is named eth0.

On wireless, all my wireless adapters are picked up. i can configure with either wicd or ceni.

As far as jerry's findings with his wired/wireless, wicd does not show the wired inteface by default unless the wired is already connected. there is a preference setting to change that behavior (checkbox to 'always display wired interface'). Hotplugging a wired interface worked on the one desktop machine I have with broadcom wireless and intel wired, however it did cause some strangeness in the wicd display.

the asus 904ha netbook has a tendency to freeze up when using ceni, however, it does eventually settle down and allow ceni to work. This is on a live session, haven't tried installed on that machine. wicd works fine without freezing.

Here's the inxi -F on the 904ha.

My test so far. Ceni connects wpa2 wireless pcmcia N card OK in live without a wired connection. As far as installs go. I am now on my 3rd attempt. Seems after install.
Vesa defaults to 800X600 and CPU is hammering at 100%.

Not sure why

Code: Select all

demo@antiX1:~

           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2
I am not using the savage driver at all in live mode and screen is hard to read after a install
with lines going through all GUI apps like Terminal, Menu, Conky, and rox file manager.

So very hard to deal with.

Code: Select all

partition setup above. I usually install. Then symlink showing folders in home like Music and Videos to the data partition to save on space in home and it makes reinstalls easier later.

Installer is saying smartctl that my drive passes but predicts it will die in a year.
Like I am not having a hard enough time.
Test results and still trying. Off to try another install. If someone can tell me how to edit
the kernel line in grub menu after install on the fly for a cli boot without slim.
so I can run smxi. I'm all ears.
I tried putting a"3" in the advanced SYSINV 2nd grub boot line.
But I was taken to slim anyways. Maybe because I did not put the"3" on the end of the kernel line. But inbetween SYSINV and the kernel line. Maybe I should have put it on the very very end?

I cannot find a way to reproduce this on demand, although it always presents at some stage during a session. They are always there at the start of a the session, then unpredicatbly disappear.

running live with persistence. Network interface names will particular to the individual machine, as udev pegs the interface name to a device's mac address. On the live without persistence, the rule file that does this is being deleted.

If one is going to use live with persistence on multiple machines, you have a couple of options network-wise.

1. if you use wicd, you will have to change the name of the interfaces in preferences everytime you change machines.
2. or you can use ceni, which will just write a new line in / etc/network/interfaces for each interface name and network combination. The only times you'll need to resuse ceni after the first time are when you change wireless networks with a already defined device or when you add a new machine.

While its tempting to suggest that the rules file be deleted on the persistent live as well, there is a catch. udev interface naming is not necessarily consistent across reboots. So if you have two devices in one machine with similar naming ( say one named eth0 and one named eth1), its possible that without the rules file in place, those names can switch (and in fact can switch right now on the live w/o persistence media).

yay udev.

Anyway, here's an inxi -F on a Thinkpad T420. don't tell anyone, this is a work computer.

note that on this machine, the second of which I've used this persistent liveUSB, the network interface names are wlan1 and eth1. incidently, the conky network monitors assume wlan0 and eth0, so on this machine they do not automatically pop up on connection.

This is all live with no persistence. Wired is pot luck but often works without prompting. In beta1 wireless just does not work at all. In alpha5 at least I could get wireless to work some of the time. Now both WICD and Ceni fail with wireless even when they recognise the adaptor or are given the correct details, irrespective of whether wired is working or not.

is this with a particular driver maybe? I noticed in the inxi-F reports from your older reports, you have a broadcom and an atheros (ath9k). If I recall correctly, one of your machines has interfaces named eth0 and eth1, correct?

And after 3rd install. You get to see what I am dealing with. IBM T23.
Image

Image

My screen does not look as pretty or as easy to read as the scrot shots show.
It is way messier in real life.

So giving up today. I am up for suggestions on what to delete or post from /etc/X11
via a live session from /dev/sda1 root partition on internal drive.

I am not going to touch anything in case I delete or change the wrong thing.
Can you imagine though. The IBM with savage graphics posts after we go
final with a desktop like I posted above? My patched a5 behaved better
on the 30 gig ide drive I installed it to that is sitting in the laptop bag.

I won't know what to tell clueless new users? Other than install a different distro
or buy a different used laptop.

Rant over. It is raining outside and I'd rather be riding motorcycle. __{{emoticon}}__
So any

anyone needs. I am up for it!

I can not confirm the above problems with wicd.

I install on a machine with wlan then I use wicd. So that I know my way around. (I am familiar with ceni not, so I do not use it)

wicd will change from cable to wirless and back, no problem. With the live-ISO just like an installation.

of course, must be in the relevant startup file

Code: Select all

wicd-client -t &
(do not be irritated with me wlan = eth0)

Don't ask me how I fixed this. Because all I did was Ctl+Alt+F1 to get out of GUI at slim login. I logged in at cli. Then logged into root with su.

Code: Select all

apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-savage
That remove 2 packages. Savage driver and xserver-xorg-video all.

then I did

Code: Select all

apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-vesa
That just removed vesa driver. Then next I did

Code: Select all

apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-vesa
to reinstall vesa fresh/virgin.
Then next

Code: Select all

exit
to get out of root terminal. Then Ctrl+Alt+F7 or so till I got back to slim login screen (I can't remember which F key exactly). Logged into this

Code: Select all

harry@antix1:~
$ inxi -G

           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2
CPU has quit hammering at 100%. Hell if I know how my poke and hope fixed this. What she looks like now.

So. Install looks like it is now good. I have yet to reboot though.
Before this. Every 3rd boot or so was a hard freeze/lockup that I
had not mentioned previously on the install on internal hard drive.
Live boot was OK. Still using Ceni for wireless on this installation.

I read and tried as root after cd'ing into / etc/X11 in cli

Code: Select all

Xorg -configure
It errored out about a lock in /tmp and said I need to remove it and try again.
So I rm the lock file and try again.
Then errors all over the place and now I lock up hard after logging in with slim. My fix is above this post on how
I dug myself out of this hole. __{{emoticon}}__
